Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, has had a civil lawsuit filed by his sister dismissed. Annie Altman had accused her brother of repeated sexual abuse spanning from 1997 to 2006, allegations he has denied. The dismissal came after Annie Altman refused to undergo an independent medical examination, a decision that led US District Judge Zachary Bluestone to rule against the continuation of the case.
Annie Altman filed the lawsuit in St. Louis federal court in January 2025. She alleged that the sexual abuse and rape occurred at their family home in suburban Clayton, Missouri, beginning when she was three years old and he was twelve. She further stated that the last acts of abuse took place while Sam Altman was an adult.
Lawyers for both parties have made limited public statements. Laura Politi, a lawyer for Annie Altman, did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while Santos Perez, who previously represented Annie Altman, stated he is no longer authorized to comment but still believes in Annie. Lawyers for Sam Altman have also not responded to requests for comment.
The Altman family has previously stated that Annie Altman has faced mental health challenges and has received financial support. Sam Altman has asserted that his sister began making accusations on social media after the family rejected her demands for additional funds.
Sam Altman rose to prominence as a key figure in the artificial intelligence boom, particularly following the release of the ChatGPT chatbot in 2022.
