Sam Altman Wins Dismissal of Sister's Lawsuit
A judge dismissed the case after the plaintiff refused to attend a required medical examination.
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has had a lawsuit brought by his sister, Ann Altman, dismissed by a U.S. district judge. The dismissal came after Ann Altman refused to attend an independent medical examination, a decision the judge noted would result in the case being thrown out.
Ann Altman had accused her older brother of sexually abusing her between 1997 and 2006, claims that Sam Altman has consistently denied. The case was filed in January 2025 in the Eastern District of Missouri. Ann Altman alleged the abuse began when she was three years old and Sam Altman was 12.
However, the Altman family issued a joint statement at the time of the filing, expressing concern for Ann Altman's well-being. The family stated they have provided her with consistent financial support, covering monthly living expenses, rent, and medical assistance for years. According to the family, her claims against Sam Altman have varied significantly over time and were "utterly untrue."
District Judge Zachary Bluestone ruled that Ann Altman failed to comply with discovery obligations, despite multiple accommodations and opportunities to participate in an independent medical examination. She did not appear for the examination on three separate occasions, leading the judge to conclude she had "failed to meaningfully prosecute her case." The judge stated that Ann Altman's "intransigence" had forced the case to a halt, leaving the court with no other options but to dismiss her claims with prejudice.
