Salmon Sperm DNA Treatment Offers Novel Approach to Under-Eye Rejuvenation
An aesthetician discusses a treatment using polynucleotides derived from salmon sperm to improve skin elasticity and reduce dark circles.
A new injectable treatment utilizing DNA extracted from salmon sperm is gaining attention for its potential to rejuvenate the skin, particularly around the eyes. The treatment, which involves injecting purified salmon or trout DNA fragments known as polynucleotides, aims to stimulate the skin's natural repair processes.
Aesthetician Suzie Vaughan, founder of SV Aesthetics in London, explained that polynucleotides work by supporting collagen production, enhancing hydration, and improving skin elasticity. This approach differs from traditional tear trough fillers, which primarily plump hollow areas. Instead, polynucleotides focus on improving skin quality from within, addressing concerns such as dehydration, fine lines, and a lack of elasticity.
Vaughan expressed reservations about recommending fillers for the under-eye area due to potential long-term aesthetic issues and risks, including lumpiness, scarring, and, in rare cases, blindness if injected into a blood vessel. She contrasted this with the Nucleofill treatment, which she described as costing £350 per session and focusing on encouraging the skin's own regenerative processes.
The treatment is derived from salmon milt, a byproduct of the food industry. The sperm is processed and filtered to extract the DNA. For individuals seeking under-eye improvement, polynucleotides can be a more cost-effective option compared to tear trough fillers, which can cost up to £950.
The procedure itself is relatively brief, lasting about 15 minutes, but can be uncomfortable. The injection process involves depositing ten doses of polynucleotides, which can cause a stinging sensation. After the injections, small, raised bumps may appear at the injection sites, typically subsiding within 24 to 48 hours. Some minor bruising can also occur. Downtime is minimal, with most side effects resolving within a week.
Initial results may take time to become apparent, with noticeable improvements in dark circles and overall complexion appearing gradually over several weeks. A full course of treatment often involves four sessions, with results potentially lasting up to a year. While individual results can vary, the treatment is reported to brighten the under-eye area and improve the skin's overall health and appearance, leading some to forego concealer.
While celebrities such as Jennifer Aniston are said to endorse such treatments, Vaughan advises that expectations should be discussed during an initial consultation. The efficacy and outcomes can differ among individuals.
