Sally Jessy Raphael Cuts Price on Historic Hudson Valley Estate
Talk show host's 'fairytale castle' now listed at $3.95 million after multiple reductions.
Talk show legend Sally Jessy Raphael has significantly reduced the asking price for her historic Hudson Valley estate, known as Elmwood Farm. The 25-acre property in Pawling, New York, is now on the market for $3.95 million, a $2.5 million decrease from its original listing price in 2023 and more than $1 million off its May asking price of $5 million.
Raphael, who purchased the estate in 1997 for $1.725 million, has invested over $1 million in improvements while preserving its historic character. The mansion, constructed between the 1860s and the early 1900s, boasts 15,000 square feet of living space, featuring eight bedrooms, 10 fireplaces, and grand reception rooms. Its Gothic-inspired spires, steep roofs, and a four-story tower contribute to its fairytale appearance.
The interior features cathedral ceilings, intricate leaded-glass windows, carved woodwork, and elaborate plaster detailing. A grand oak staircase and a private chapel are among its unique elements, alongside a sunroom and an upper wing with storybook-style murals.
Beyond the main residence, the estate includes two caretaker homes, staff quarters, and a carriage house that can serve as an entertainment space or guest residence. The grounds feature rolling lawns, mature trees, a greenhouse, a yoga space, and a 12,000-square-foot stable. A swimming pool is also present, though it requires restoration.
The property's history dates back to 1744, with the main mansion built over several decades between the 1860s and early 1900s. It reportedly remained in the same family for nine generations before Raphael acquired it.
Pawling and its neighboring Quaker Hill area have historically attracted notable figures, including broadcaster Edward R. Murrow, former Governor Thomas E. Dewey, and author Norman Vincent Peale. Actor James Earl Jones also has ties to the wider region.
Raphael, host of the syndicated talk show "Sally" for nearly two decades, became a prominent figure in daytime television, known for her signature red glasses and interviewing style.
