Sales of Essential Goods Surge Following Government Stockpiling Advice

Major retailers have experienced a substantial rise in sales of essential goods after the government encouraged the public to stock up in anticipation of potential crises. Iceland supermarket chain noted a 40% increase in sales of tinned products over a single weekend, indicating that consumers heeded the government's advice.

This surge in purchasing follows remarks made by Defence Secretary Wes Streeting last week, who advised citizens to stockpile essentials in preparation for emergencies such as cyber attacks or extreme weather events. The items highlighted by Streeting appear to correspond with the goods that have seen increased sales.

Specific sales figures obtained by BBC Newsnight reveal a dramatic uptick in related items. Robert Dyas reported a 160% increase in radio sales compared to the previous week. Meanwhile, Maplin saw a 92% rise in radio sales, a 284% increase in torch sales, and a 106% rise in power bank sales. These figures from Maplin cover the period since the government's announcement, compared to the same period last month.

Ollie Marshall, managing director at Maplin, stated, "Within hours of the Be Ready announcement we saw people reach for the basics - a torch, a wind-up radio, a power bank. Torch sales nearly quadrupled and radio sales almost doubled in three days." He added, "These are simple, affordable products that keep a household connected and informed when the power goes out, and it's encouraging to see people taking the advice seriously."

On October 22, Streeting outlined recommendations for preparedness, suggesting individuals should have three liters of water per person per day, tinned goods, baby food, battery-powered torches, and mobile phone charging packs. Responding to the retail sales data, the defence secretary commented, "It's encouraging that people are taking practical steps to be ready. Having a few everyday essentials at home, from tinned food to torches, helps households prepare for disruption, whether that's flooding, power cuts or burst pipes. We can all play our part in making Britain more resilient."

An Iceland spokesperson confirmed the trend, telling the BBC programme, "It's clear consumers have listened to the government's message as we have seen a 40% increase in sales of tinned products over the weekend and strong sales of bottled water too. Our supplies of these products remain healthy."

Independent retailers have also reported a significant increase in sales of goods mentioned by the defence secretary. Josh Pringle from the online store Sgt Prepper said his sales had increased tenfold, noting, "We were a small outfit on Wednesday. And then the government launched the Be Ready campaign and we couldn't believe what we were seeing – order after order after order. Most of them were for a wind-up radio."

Lincoln Miles, founder of Preppers Shop UK, observed a 650% increase in sales following the government's announcement, remarking that "Everything about off grid seems to be the key of what people are buying for the minute."
