Saleh Defends Released Titan Elliott, Calls Gun Incident a 'Call for Help'

Tennessee Titans head coach Robert Saleh stated he believes defensive lineman Jordan Elliott, who was released by the team Tuesday, was experiencing a "call for help" rather than acting criminally when he retrieved a firearm from his car after an argument with a teammate.

Elliott was released after the incident during practice last Thursday, where he had a confrontation with offensive lineman JC Latham. According to reports, Elliott was told to leave the practice field and later was seen on security cameras heading to his car to retrieve a gun. Fellow Titan John Franklin-Myers reportedly intervened before Elliott could proceed further.

"These kids go through a lot," Saleh said Wednesday. "I will stand on the table for Jordan’s character. My message to 31 other teams: If you need a hell of a run-stopping (defensive tackle) that can help for a playoff run, give me a call. I’ll tell you everything you need to know about him. He’s a good man. Had a terrible lapse in judgement that I recognize as a call for help more than a criminal act."

Sources indicated that Elliott had been dealing with family issues at home, and his reaction during practice was likely a result of those personal struggles. He did not practice Friday, citing non-injury related/personal reasons, and was inactive for the Titans' subsequent game against the Colts.

Saleh referenced recent suicides among NFL players, expressing concern about the mental health support available to athletes. Elliott joined the Titans after following Saleh from the 49ers, having previously spent four seasons with the Cleveland Browns to start his NFL career.
