Saints Owner Gayle Benson Vows Action Amidst Team's Poor Performance
New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson expresses dissatisfaction with the team's 1-4 start, stating she "will not accept this level of performance" and hinting at potential changes.
New Orleans Saints owner Gayle Benson has voiced her strong disapproval of the team's current performance, issuing a stern warning that changes are imminent if improvements are not made. The Saints currently hold a 1-4 record, following a recent 23-13 loss to the Minnesota Vikings at home.
"I will not make excuses, and I will not accept this level of performance as our standard," Benson stated at an event in New Orleans on Tuesday. "I am committed to making the decisions necessary to improve this team. Everyone in this organization understands the urgency. We must prepare better, execute consistently and correct the mistakes that are costing us the games."
Benson emphasized that accountability extends throughout the organization, placing responsibility on head coach Kellen Moore, general manager Mickey Loomis, and the players themselves. "Kellen Moore and his coaches are responsible for preparing our players to perform," Benson said. "Mickey Loomis and our football staff are responsible for building a roster capable of sustained success. Our players are responsible for their preparation and execution. I am responsible for holding this organization accountable."
After an initial loss to the Lions and a subsequent win against the Ravens, the Saints have lost three consecutive games, with deficits of at least eight points in each defeat, all occurring in New Orleans. The team's Week 4 blowout loss to the Atlanta Falcons, which coincided with a celebration of the franchise's return to the Caesars Superdome after Hurricane Katrina, was described by Benson as "truly disappointing."
Under Moore, who is in his second season as head coach, the Saints have compiled a 7-15 record. Loomis, who has been with the organization for 26 years, has been part of a period that saw nine playoff appearances and a Super Bowl victory in 2010. However, the team has failed to make the postseason in the last five seasons.
