Saints Defensive Coordinator Brandon Staley Rebuffs Troy Aikman's Criticism
Staley dismisses Aikman's assertion that the Saints defense 'doesn't have any answers' following a loss to the Falcons.
New Orleans Saints defensive coordinator Brandon Staley has responded forcefully to criticism from NFL commentator Troy Aikman, who suggested the Saints' defense "doesn't have any answers." The comments were made during the broadcast of the Saints' recent game against the Atlanta Falcons.
During the third quarter of the "Monday Night Football" broadcast, Aikman stated, "Brandon Staley, he just simply doesn’t have any answers. And I think he knew it when we talked to him coming in." He further elaborated that the absence of key pass rushers and run defenders left the team without a "star defender that can erase mistakes for other people," concluding that "this was a matchup issue coming into this game, and it’s proven true."
In a press conference Thursday, Staley directly addressed Aikman's remarks. "I did hear about those comments, and I have no idea what he’s talking about," Staley told reporters. "It was a tough night for us, and certainly, I’m responsible. I’m calling the defense, but we’ve got a great group of guys."
Staley highlighted the team's performance against Falcons' running back Bijan Robinson in the previous season, noting, "No one defended [Bijan Robinson] last year better than us. He’s a hell of a player. But our group defended him twice last year better than anyone through his time in the NFL."
Last season, the Saints held Robinson to 103 rushing yards and five receptions for 47 yards across two games, with no touchdowns. However, in the recent game, Robinson rushed for 145 yards and scored two touchdowns.
The Saints' defense struggled against the Falcons, allowing 45 points, including five rushing touchdowns and 205 rushing yards. The team was notably without linebacker Kaden Elliss and edge rushers Carl Granderson and Anfernee Jennings.
Staley expressed that Aikman's comments were bothersome "because they’re not true." He defended his players after Aikman described some Saints as "standing around watching the play, missed tackles, just bad football" on Atlanta's fifth touchdown.
"Our guys have played the right way. And mainly that’s assignment, technique, effort, all in one," Staley said. "I think the other night, we were missing two out of the three. Our effort was there."
