Dominic Peterson, a 19-year-old sophomore at Saint Mary’s College, died Friday after suffering a medical emergency during a training run with his rugby teammates in Moraga, California. The nature of the medical crisis has not been disclosed.

Peterson was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead, according to a letter from Saint Mary's College president Roger Thompson. The Moraga-Orinda Fire Protection District responded to the incident.

The Saint Mary’s Gaels rugby program announced Peterson's death Saturday night, remembering him as a cherished teammate. "Dominic’s smile was contagious and one that would brighten a room when he entered," the team stated in a social media post. "He always gave 100% effort and encouraged those around him to do the same."

A memorial service was held Saturday morning at the Saint Mary's College Chapel. The loss has deeply affected the college community, with athletes from other programs offering support to Peterson's teammates and family.

Tributes also came from the wider rugby community. Paul Keeler, executive director of the College Rugby Association of America, expressed grief for Peterson's family, teammates, coaches, and classmates, stating, "The loss of a young man and teammate in circumstances like these is difficult to comprehend."

Peterson's former teammates at California Grizzlies Rugby recalled him as a natural leader, noting that he had captained their U19 boys squad during international tours to Japan and Argentina. "Captain. Teammate. Friend," the club wrote in a tribute. "We have lost one of our leaders, and we are heartbroken."
