Sainsbury's is launching a new work experience program that will offer opportunities to 10,000 young people across England, Scotland, and Wales in an effort to address the youth unemployment crisis. The initiative, set to begin in October 2026, will provide young individuals with behind-the-scenes access to the company's operations and introduce them to various departments, including technology, logistics, and food.
The program is divided into two age groups. The "KickStarter Insights" scheme is designed for individuals aged 16 to 24 and will feature one-day regional employability workshops focused on interview preparation and job application skills. Interested candidates can register by emailing [email protected].
The "Kickstart Explore" program targets school students aged 14 to 18. This initiative will combine in-school learning with practical work experience, including workshops, digital sessions, and store visits, totaling approximately 24 hours per student. This program is coordinated through schools, not through direct application by students.
Sainsbury's stated that the program will prioritize schools with a high uptake of free school meals and communities where young people face significant barriers to employment. Participants will have their lunch and travel expenses covered.
Simon Roberts, Sainsbury’s chief executive, emphasized the company's commitment to supporting young people's careers. "Few things matter more to us at Sainsbury’s than helping young people get on that first rung on the career ladder," Roberts said. "With a quarter of our colleagues under 25, we see every day how much a first job can change lives."
This initiative comes at a time when young adults face a challenging employment market. According to a report by the Work Foundation, 36% of companies have reduced entry-level job openings for 16 to 24-year-olds in the past year. A significant 73% of employers consider the rise in youth worklessness a "national crisis." Currently, over one million individuals aged 16 to 24 are classified as NEET (not in employment, education, or training).
