Sainsbury's and Argos Announce 17,500 Christmas Hires

Sainsbury's and Argos are seeking to hire 17,500 temporary staff members across Great Britain to support operations during the Christmas period. The roles will be distributed across Sainsbury's supermarkets, convenience stores, warehouses, Argos stores, and online fulfillment centers.

Pay rates for these temporary positions range from £13.23 to £16 per hour, depending on the specific role and location. In-store positions offer between £13.23 and £14.54 per hour. Delivery driver roles command slightly higher wages, with Argos drivers earning between £14.23 and £15.54 per hour, and Sainsbury's drivers earning £14.73 to £16.04 per hour. The company stated that pay variations are due to differing responsibilities and local market conditions.

Beyond hourly wages, seasonal employees will benefit from an uncapped 10% staff discount at both Sainsbury's and Argos. This discount increases to 15% on Fridays and Saturdays for those working at Sainsbury's. Additionally, supermarket staff will receive free food during their shifts.

These Christmas roles will be offered on fixed-term contracts, lasting between four and 12 weeks. Applicants must generally be over 18 years old and possess the Right to Work eligibility in the UK. Delivery driver candidates require a full UK driver's license valid for at least the past 12 months and must pass an online driving risk assessment as part of the interview process. Some roles may involve handling heavy loads, with delivery drivers potentially needing to move containers up to 15kg.

Tracey Clements, chief retail, logistics and supply chain officer at Sainsbury’s, highlighted the importance of seasonal staff in ensuring a successful holiday period for customers. "Christmas is always a special time for our customers and colleagues and our seasonal team members help make it happen," Clements said. "We look forward to welcoming thousands of new colleagues who will help us deliver great-tasting festive food, brilliant service and fantastic value across our stores, fulfilment centres and delivery operations."

Interested applicants can apply through the Sainsbury's Christmas Job Opportunities portal or by contacting their local store. Earlier this year, Sainsbury's agreed to sell the Argos business to Swift Partners, though the deal has not yet been finalized.
