A safety expert has outlined a strategy to gain an advantage during a home invasion, advising individuals not to turn on lights if an intruder breaks in. Kailee Billerbeck, founder of the self-defense program Everyday Armor, shared this tip in a recent TikTok video.
Billerbeck explained that if immediate escape is not possible, the primary action should be to hide. Crucially, she advises against illuminating the space, stating that turning on lights can reveal one's location to the intruder. She noted that individuals are more familiar with their home's layout and can navigate the darkness more effectively.
Following the advice to remain in the dark, Billerbeck recommended barricading oneself in a secure location. This involves using furniture to create obstacles and then hiding behind them. While barricaded, the next step is to contact emergency services. She suggested leaving the phone line open if possible. For areas that support it, texting 911 is also an option, providing the address and any details about the assailant.
If a confrontation is unavoidable, Billerbeck advised grabbing an item that can increase one's reach and defensive capabilities. She explained that in high-stress situations, fine motor skills can be impaired, making movements that increase wingspan more effective. Items like a lamp or a baseball bat can serve this purpose, providing a greater range and potentially a more impactful strike. Billerbeck cautioned that such items should only be used in self-defense.
After an incident, once it is safe to emerge, Billerbeck stressed the importance of not touching anything and instead documenting the scene. Statistics from ADT indicate that most home break-ins occur between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., with burglaries more frequent during summer months. Common targets include cash, valuables, and prescription medications.
