Ryan Murphy Confirms 'Glee' Reboot Script Completed
The co-creator of the hit musical series announced the script is finished, with original cast members expressing enthusiasm.
Ryan Murphy, co-creator of the television series "Glee," announced that the script for a potential reboot of the show has been completed. Murphy shared the update on Wednesday at the premiere of "American Horror Story" Season 13 in New York City, telling Entertainment Tonight that he "just finished the script an hour ago."
Murphy, along with co-writers Brad Falchuk and Ian Brennan, who penned the first two seasons of "Glee," have collaborated on the new script. Murphy stated that he has been in contact with approximately ten original cast members, who have reportedly shown enthusiasm for the project. "It's very sweet, and they all had a lot of questions, but they all were very enthusiastic about the idea," Murphy said.
While the script is complete, Murphy indicated that none of the actors have read it yet. He expressed an openness to receiving feedback from the cast, acknowledging the close relationships formed during the show's original run. "I vowed to myself that I wanted to write a couple of them to see what people think, particularly the cast, cause we were very close when we were making it," he explained.
Sources have reported that the reboot, being developed by 20th Television, has not yet been attached to a streaming platform or network. "Glee" originally aired for six seasons on Fox from 2009 to 2015, focusing on the fictional William McKinley High School's glee club. The series starred actors such as Lea Michele, Cory Monteith, Matthew Morrison, Jane Lynch, Naya Rivera, Dianna Agron, Chris Colfer, Amber Riley, Darren Criss, Heather Morris, Mark Salling, Kevin McHale, Jenna Ushkowitz, and Harry Shum Jr.
Tragically, Cory Monteith, Naya Rivera, and Mark Salling passed away in the years following the show's premiere. Murphy had previously expressed interest in revisiting "Glee" in July, noting its renewed popularity among younger audiences. "That show is interesting because it's come back around. So many young people now watch it," he told People. "And I'm like, 'Maybe we should revisit that show.'"
Jane Lynch, who played the formidable Sue Sylvester, recently shared her willingness to participate in a reboot, telling Kylie Kelce's podcast "Not Gonna Lie" that she would be "the first one in line to do it" if a project materializes. Lea Michele, who portrayed Rachel Berry, also confirmed her interest last week, stating to E! News that she "love[s] 'Glee'" and would "follow Ryan wherever he goes."
