Ryan Hanafin Waives Extradition in Mother's Homicide Case
Massachusetts man arrested in Vermont agrees to return to face charges in connection with mother's shooting death.
Ryan Hanafin, 22, has waived extradition and agreed to be returned to Massachusetts from Vermont, where he was arrested Thursday. His mother, Andria Hanafin, 49, was found shot dead in the kitchen of her Reading, Massachusetts, home earlier that day.
Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan stated that Massachusetts State Police were expected to retrieve Hanafin quickly. He appeared virtually for a hearing in Vermont, answering affirmatively when asked if he understood the proceedings and his rights.
During the hearing, Hanafin confirmed he could hear the judge and understood that by waiving extradition, he would forgo the formal governor's warrant process and the opportunity to file a habeas petition. He affirmed that this decision was voluntary and that he was not under the influence of drugs or experiencing any mental conditions that would affect his judgment.
Hanafin was taken into custody by Vermont State Police in Warren, Vermont, after an alert was issued for his black Dodge Charger. Authorities apprehended him without incident approximately two hours into their search. The specific felony charges he faces in Massachusetts have not yet been publicly identified, and he is currently considered a person of interest by Reading police.
A status conference has been scheduled for the following Thursday to confirm Hanafin's transfer back to Massachusetts. The entire extradition hearing lasted approximately four minutes.
