Ryan Gosling's career has taken a notable turn towards blockbuster franchises, a shift experts attribute to his embrace of a family-first philosophy since becoming a father. This evolution has led to major roles in upcoming films such as Marvel's "Ghost Rider," slated for a 2028 release, and "Star Wars: Starfighter," set to premiere in 2027.

Gosling, 45, announced his role as the supernatural hero Ghost Rider during Marvel Studios' panel at San Diego Comic-Con. This casting marks a significant step in a career that has seen him transition from critically acclaimed dramas to more mainstream, family-friendly projects. The actor has openly shared that his priorities changed after having daughters Esmeralda and Amada with longtime partner Eva Mendes. He told the Wall Street Journal that he avoids psychologically demanding roles to remain emotionally present for his family, emphasizing that decisions are made with Eva and their family in mind.

"He began picking lighter roles to keep his mood stable for his family and also create art that they can be a part of," said PR expert Sarah Schmidt. This strategic shift aligns with a broader trend among actors who adjust their career choices as their personal lives evolve. "It does feel as though he is gravitating toward movies that his kids could actually see and enjoy," noted Paul Dergarabedian, Head of Marketplace Trends for Rentrak. "That kind of evolution is not unique as we have seen it with other actors as they get older, start families, and begin making choices that reflect where they are in life."

Gosling's career trajectory has come full circle, beginning as a child performer on Disney Channel's "The All-New Mickey Mouse Club." After establishing himself in serious acting at age 19, he gained mainstream recognition with "The Notebook" in 2004. He went on to star in critically lauded films like "Half Nelson," "Blue Valentine," "Drive," and "Blade Runner 2049." However, in recent years, Gosling has focused on audience-pleasing films such as "Barbie," "The Fall Guy," and "Project Hail Mary."

"Ryan has not only built a career of acclaimed roles, those films are often box office successes," said Ryan McCormick, co-founder of Goldman McCormick PR. "He has attained a rare status where he can do a sandbox film like 'Ghost Rider' and also take a dramatic or independent role without any one performance limiting his future choices."

Gosling's versatility has long been noted, with performances in "Crazy, Stupid, Love" and the musical "La La Land" showcasing his range. He stated that "La La Land" was the first project he chose with his children in mind, considering how they might enjoy watching him prepare for the role. Similarly, his portrayal of Ken in "Barbie" resonated with his daughters, who were already fans of the dolls. This role in "Barbie," which grossed over $1.4 billion worldwide, significantly altered his career's trajectory, proving he could lead a major blockbuster without sacrificing his critical credibility.

"Gosling proved that just because he began his career as a critically acclaimed darling does not mean that he cannot also be an international franchise and blockbuster star," Schmidt commented. "'Barbie' paved the way. Prior to that, Gosling was a serious actor who occasionally moonlighted in a rom-com."

Gosling has continued to involve his daughters in his work, with them even voicing his alien co-star Rocky during rehearsals for "Project Hail Mary." "Sometimes when I was working and I needed to sort of switch things up or whatever, my kids would come in and I had an earpiece in my ear and they would talk for Rocky, so I could talk to them as Rocky," Gosling told People. "And there's some moments in the movie where I'm laughing or I'm just so charmed by him, which is like, it's actually my kids talking to me and helping me out."

The upcoming "Ghost Rider" film will reunite Gosling with director Shawn Levy. "As you know, this is a character I’ve wanted to play for a very long time," Gosling told the crowd at Comic-Con after being revealed as the character.

Experts believe Gosling has successfully balanced artistic merit with commercial success while staying true to his priorities. "He became a dad first, actor second," Schmidt said. "He is building a filmography legacy that his kids can be part of and proud of."

Dergarabedian added that Gosling's recent choices have solidified his status as one of Hollywood's leading stars, possessing a rare combination of credibility, charm, range, and the elusive movie-star quality.
