Rutgers head coach Greg Schiano experienced a notable sideline outburst during the team's close game against No. 12 USC on Saturday, resulting in a costly penalty and a visibly animated reaction from the coach.
In the third quarter, with USC attempting to extend a drive, a play was blown dead due to an inadvertent whistle. This led to a third-down situation. However, Rutgers was subsequently flagged for an illegal substitution penalty, which advanced USC's position on the field. Schiano was seen on the CBS broadcast engaging with an official, and an assistant coach attempted to restrain him as he became animated on the sideline. During the heated exchange, Schiano knocked down a field marker.
Despite the controversy, USC quarterback Jayden Maiava's drive continued, including a 32-yard completion on the ensuing third down. Although USC ultimately turned the ball over on downs, Rutgers was unable to capitalize on their subsequent possession.
The game concluded with USC securing a 42-35 victory. The Scarlet Knights amassed 460 total yards in the loss, with quarterback Dylan Lonergan throwing for three touchdowns and two interceptions. USC's King Miller contributed 102 rushing yards and a touchdown. The Trojans maintained their undefeated record at 4-0, though the game highlighted areas for improvement.
This marked one of Rutgers' more competitive performances of the season, following earlier defeats against UMass and Boston College.
