Russian Strikes Kill 2 in Ukraine as Kyiv Faces Escalating Attacks

Russian forces killed two people and wounded five more in strikes across Ukraine on Friday, officials said, amid an escalation of Russian bombardments that have claimed more than 50 lives in the past three days. The attacks come as Ukraine grapples with its ability to counter increasingly intense aerial assaults.

In the Zaporizhzhia region, one man was killed and five people were injured when strikes hit residential areas, including a child among the wounded, according to Mykhailo Semikin, head of the regional military administration. Separately, another man died in Ivano-Frankivsk in western Ukraine, as reported by Svitlana Onyshchuk, the head of that region's military administration.

Kyiv also reported that Russian attacks on warehouse facilities in the Bucha district of the Kyiv region wounded three people on Friday, with rescuers searching for a woman potentially trapped under rubble, according to Ukraine's Interior Ministry.

Russia and Ukraine are engaged in a long-range aerial conflict, while their ground forces remain largely static along the front lines, more than four and a half years after Russia's full-scale invasion.

On Friday, a Ukrainian attack on Russia's eastern Belgorod region resulted in two deaths and 12 injuries, according to regional emergency headquarters and Governor Alexander Shuvayev.

Over the preceding three days, Russian attacks, employing a mix of ballistic missiles and jet-powered drones, have killed dozens of civilians across Ukraine. A Russian guided bomb struck near public buses filled with passengers in eastern Ukraine on Thursday, killing 30 people. The day before, a Russian missile strike in Pryluky, a town in northern Ukraine, killed 22 people, including five children.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has warned of potential escalations in daily attacks as winter approaches, aiming to pressure Ukraine as it prepares for the cold season and as it strives to maintain its war-battered economy. Recent Russian targets have included energy systems, key industries, railways, post offices, shopping centers, telecommunication networks, gas stations, and grain exports.

Zelenskyy has appealed for additional defense support from NATO countries, emphasizing the need for concrete actions beyond verbal support. He stated that supplies of anti-ballistic capabilities, ammunition for combat aircraft, and investments in interceptors are crucial for saving lives daily.

Ukraine faces challenges in stopping Russian ballistic weapons without sufficient ammunition for its U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems. The country is also working to develop a new generation of interceptors capable of countering Moscow's high-flying jet-propelled drones.

In separate incidents, a Ukrainian drone strike damaged a data center belonging to Russian technology company Yandex in the Kaluga region, disabling several modules. This marks the second such attack on the company in as many days, following a previous drone strike that affected a data center in Russia's Ryazan region. The governor of the Kaluga region reported nine people wounded by drone attacks in the area. Additionally, a Ukrainian drone reportedly caused a fire at a factory in Tver, with no casualties reported.
