A newly appointed Russian government official, Igor Chaika, has become the subject of widespread online commentary and dark humor due to his substantial physique. Chaika, who heads Russia's Federal Agency for the Commonwealth of Independent States Affairs (Rossotrudnichestvo), went viral after appearing at a press conference.
Internet users on platforms like X (formerly Twitter) made light of Chaika's size, with one popular post quipping, "Good luck to Putin managing to push this official out of a window." This comment alluded to a pattern of high-profile Russian officials, oligarchs, and critics of President Vladimir Putin who have died under suspicious circumstances, sometimes reportedly falling from windows or balconies, particularly since the start of the war in Ukraine.
Other online jokes compared Chaika to the character Peter Griffin from the animated series "Family Guy." Some users also made exaggerated claims about his size, such as "This guy could occupy Crimea by literally standing in it."
The images that fueled the online discussion were initially circulated by state-run Russian media outlets, including Zvezda, Rossiya, RT, and Sputnik. While one viral post appeared to use AI to enhance Chaika's appearance, original photos from the press conference and those taken by Getty Images show him appearing notably large next to his colleagues.
Igor Chaika is also a prominent businessman and is the son of former Russian Prosecutor General Yury Chaika. His appointment to lead Rossotrudnichestvo, an agency focused on international humanitarian and cultural cooperation, drew attention alongside the online reactions to his appearance.
