Russian Missile Attack Kills One, Injures 15 in Kyiv
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy blames delays in Western munitions for enabling Russian attacks on civilian infrastructure.
A Russian missile attack on Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, killed at least one person and injured 15 others, according to Ukrainian officials. The strikes, which occurred late Monday, hit a university campus and surrounding urban areas, causing significant damage.
Among the injured were five students and university staff, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated. The injured were taken to hospitals, and rescue operations were underway to search for potential survivors trapped under rubble.
Kyiv's Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed the casualty numbers and reported that the attack damaged parts of the university campus, Kyoto Park, a nearby metro station, and residential buildings. Russia's Ministry of Defense claimed its forces targeted an "industrial enterprise producing and storing long- and medium-range unmanned aerial vehicles" in Kyiv, as well as "transport infrastructure."
President Zelenskyy criticized the timing of the attack, suggesting that recent "artificial and prolonged delays" in the delivery of air defense systems, such as Patriots and NASAMS, have enabled Russia's actions. "The pressure on Russia and real support for Ukraine are needed to change the situation," he wrote on social media.
Ukraine reported that Russia launched 16 ballistic missiles and at least 255 drones during the overnight assault. Ukrainian air defenses intercepted two of the ballistic missiles, according to Ukrainian authorities. The strikes reportedly extended beyond Kyiv, impacting cities including Vinnytsia, Zaporizhzhia, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Odesa, Chernihiv, Sumy, Donetsk, Kherson, and Chernivtsi, targeting energy infrastructure, logistics centers, and civilian facilities.
