Russian Drone Strikes Kyiv School Amid Intensified Aerial Attacks

A Russian drone struck a school in Kyiv on Thursday, city officials reported, as the Ukrainian capital continued to face intense aerial assaults. The drone's warhead did not detonate, and no casualties were reported because children and staff were in shelters at the time of the impact, according to Mayor Vitalii Klitschko.

The strike left a large hole in the school's brick facade, exposing a staircase, and caused damage to windows. This incident is part of a broader pattern of relentless Russian aerial attacks targeting Ukrainian cities.

Kyiv has experienced frequent air raid alerts and explosions in recent weeks due to drone and missile strikes. These attacks aim to terrorize the civilian population and undermine their will to resist, according to officials and analysts. The sustained pressure is taking a toll on residents, with some reporting increased stress and anxiety.

Strained Air Defenses and Military Needs

Ukraine's air defense systems are under strain as Russia escalates aerial attacks using ballistic missiles and high-altitude drones. President Volodymyr Zelensky held a call with military and government officials to discuss infrastructure protection and noted delays in implementing agreed-upon measures.

Zelensky announced that the Foreign Ministry and Defense Ministry would review agreements with international partners regarding ammunition for air defenses and the supply of F-16 fighter jets, with an updated delivery schedule expected within 24 hours. He emphasized the need for additional missiles in October.

In response, Ukraine has deployed its long-range drones against Russian targets, including manufacturing facilities and drone launch sites. Zelensky confirmed that Ukrainian forces struck a drone storage and launch site in Russia's Oryol region. Ukraine is seeking U.S.-made Patriot missiles for effective defense against ballistic missiles, but their availability is limited due to ongoing conflicts. The development of domestic interceptor production is also a priority.

Sanctions and Economic Impact

Ukraine continues to advocate for stricter sanctions against Russia to curb its access to critical high-tech components for its weaponry. Britain recently imposed sanctions on Russian individuals, entities, and ships accused of spreading disinformation, evading energy sanctions, and mistreating Ukrainian civilians.

Amidst these developments, two Russian drones struck a significant bridge over the Dnipro River in Kyiv on Thursday, temporarily suspending traffic for safety inspections. Additionally, the Parkovyi data center in Kyiv sustained critical damage from repeated Russian strikes, halting its operations. Client data has reportedly been relocated to backup sites in the European Union.

Campaign Against Energy Infrastructure

While no energy infrastructure was reported hit on Thursday, officials noted that the previous day saw one of the most significant Russian attacks on the power grid since spring. Analysts suggest these attacks are part of a strategy to degrade Ukraine's energy security as winter approaches, potentially aiming to force capitulation.

Russia has reportedly begun using modified jet-powered drones equipped with warheads designed to sever high-voltage power lines, marking a new tactic in its campaign against Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
