Russia launched widespread aerial attacks across Ukraine on Tuesday, utilizing missiles, drones, and glide bombs, resulting in the deaths of at least nine civilians. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Moscow is receiving new military assistance, specifically ballistic missiles from North Korea, which he warned are being used to escalate the conflict.
Overnight strikes hit the southeastern city of Zaporizhzhia, killing six people and wounding 19, according to local officials. In the central Dnipropetrovsk region, three additional individuals, including a 15-year-old boy, died as a result of Russian drone and artillery fire. Zelenskyy reported late Monday that Russia had received additional ballistic missiles from North Korea and was preparing to deploy more North Korean troops.
This alleged military cooperation follows a strategic partnership agreement signed between Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un over two years ago, which stipulates mutual aid in the event of aggression. Experts suggest that North Korea has already supplied thousands of troops and substantial weapon stockpiles to support Russia's invasion, while also potentially improving its own military capabilities through engagement with Moscow. Zelenskyy cautioned that the battlefield experience gained by North Korean forces could embolden Pyongyang to threaten other regional nations.
Ukraine indicates that Russia is intensifying its production of ballistic missiles and may be preparing for further mobilization along the 775-mile front line in eastern and southern Ukraine. The Institute for the Study of War, a Washington-based think tank, commented that Russia's perceived viable military path, coupled with Ukraine's critical shortage of Patriot air defense interceptors, offers Moscow an opportunity to inflict significant damage and prolong the war, thereby delaying meaningful negotiations.
The Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, also sustained Russian strikes. One impact occurred on the grounds of a children's hospital, causing two craters and shattering windows, though no casualties were reported as children and staff were in bomb shelters. Another strike ignited a fire in a warehouse, affecting approximately 13,000 square feet. The Russian Defense Ministry claimed its forces targeted "military industrial facilities and transport and logistics centers" in Kyiv and Zaporizhzhia using "ground-based precision weapons," specifically mentioning drone storage facilities in Kyiv and a metallurgical plant in Zaporizhzhia. Ukraine's air force reported that Russia employed Zircon anti-ship missiles and Iskander ballistic missiles against Zaporizhzhia and Kyiv, in addition to launching 120 long-range drones nationwide.
Concurrently, Russia's Defense Ministry reported that its air defenses intercepted nearly 400 Ukrainian drones over 14 Russian regions and occupied Crimea. Russia's online retailer, Wildberries, confirmed that its logistical facilities in the Voronezh region experienced a fire due to an attack, although it stated the fire was extinguished and the stored goods were largely undamaged. Ukraine has previously targeted Wildberries warehouses and Russian oil facilities as part of its strategy to pressure Russia into negotiations.
