Russia launched a significant ballistic missile and drone attack on Kyiv and its surrounding region, killing at least one person and injuring 12 others, according to Ukrainian authorities. The assault targeted residential buildings and warehouses, with fears that people could be trapped under rubble in the city center.
Air raid alerts were in place for over an hour as multiple waves of missiles struck the capital and its outskirts. The head of Kyiv's military administration, Timur Tkachenko, stated that Russia was "once again massively attacking" and confirmed hits in the Bucha, Brovary, and Fastiv districts. Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported casualties and urged residents to heed air raid sirens.
This latest barrage follows a pattern of intensified Russian strikes on Kyiv in recent weeks. The attacks come amid a backdrop of increased Ukrainian strikes on Russian civilian infrastructure, including power facilities and warehouses belonging to the e-commerce giant Wildberries. In separate incidents earlier this week, Russian officials reported seven people killed and 58 injured in a drone attack on a beach in the Krasnodar region, and five people killed and 10 wounded in strikes on Wildberries warehouses in the Moscow region.
Ukraine has repeatedly called on its allies, particularly the United States, for more Patriot missile interceptors to bolster defenses against Russian ballistic attacks. Both sides have previously denied deliberately targeting civilians amidst the ongoing conflict.
