Russia Strikes Kyiv Hours After Agreeing to Peace Talks
One killed and 22 injured in overnight missile and drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital, authorities report.
Russian forces launched ballistic missiles and drones targeting Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, overnight into Thursday, killing one person and wounding 22, according to Ukrainian authorities. The attacks occurred just hours after Russia had agreed in principle to resume US-brokered peace talks aimed at ending the ongoing conflict.
The strikes impacted civilian infrastructure across several districts of Kyiv. In the Dniprovskyi district, located on the eastern bank of the Dnipro River, one fatality was reported along with six injuries, including a child. Fires also broke out in the affected area.
Earlier on Wednesday, Yuri Ushakov, a foreign affairs advisor to the Kremlin, stated that Russian President Vladimir Putin had agreed to restart trilateral negotiations involving Russia, the United States, and Ukraine. These talks were proposed to commence after November 10, following the US midterm elections.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky had expressed cautious optimism regarding the prospect of renewed negotiations. "We'll see what happens this time," Zelensky remarked shortly before the air raid sirens sounded over Kyiv. The agreement to resume talks followed a meeting between Putin and US envoy Steve Witkoff in St. Petersburg.
