Russia Strikes Kill 8 in Ukraine as UN Debates War Settlement

Russian drone and missile attacks killed at least eight civilians in Ukraine overnight, officials reported Thursday, as the conflict enters its fourth year with ongoing appeals for a settlement at the UN General Assembly.

In the northeastern Kharkiv region, six agricultural workers were killed and 12 others injured by a strike, according to Interior Minister Ihor Vyhivskyi. The capital, Kyiv, saw a man and a woman killed in a separate attack, while officials in the southern port city of Odesa also reported significant bombardment.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, speaking at the United Nations on Wednesday, urged nations to cut off Russian revenue through sanctions and trade bans to hinder Moscow's ability to fund the war. Despite years of diplomatic efforts at the UN and elsewhere, no breakthrough has been reached to end the conflict, which has impacted global food and energy supplies and strained relations between Russia and Western countries.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow's stance, stating that Russia seeks a comprehensive peace deal rather than a temporary truce, and reiterated demands for Ukraine to cede territory, which Kyiv finds unacceptable.

The aerial conflict has intensified in recent months, with Russia employing cruise and ballistic missiles, glide bombs, and drones. Ukraine has responded with long-range drone attacks targeting Russian oil refineries and economically vital businesses.

Along the roughly 1,250-kilometer front line in eastern and southern Ukraine, there have been few significant territorial shifts, with extensive drone activity limiting movement on both sides.

Impact on Civilians

The attack on Kyiv alone damaged over 50 civilian sites, including apartment blocks, post offices, a maternity hospital, and a textile plant, Vyhivskyi stated. Russia has repeatedly targeted civilian infrastructure such as trains, shopping malls, and gas stations, contributing to a constant state of alert for civilians.

Valentyna Kolosenko, a 49-year-old Kyiv resident, described how a solid oak door shielded her during nearby blasts, expressing a determination to endure the hardships despite her fear. "Everything is paralyzed. Nothing works," she told The Associated Press, noting the difficulty and danger of commuting to work.

Liubov Paziuk, a 74-year-old pensioner in Kyiv whose home sustained shattered windows, affirmed her resolve to resist. "We don’t get used to it, we adapt, because we have only one choice: to stay here, on our land, despite everything," she said.

Russia's Defense Ministry claimed its forces targeted arms factories, telecommunications, and logistical facilities in Kyiv and the Odesa region. The United Nations reported last week that more Ukrainian civilians were killed and wounded in the first eight months of 2026 than in the entirety of the previous year. According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Russian attacks in August resulted in at least 368 civilian deaths and 2,314 injuries.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha stated on X, "Russia’s escalation of terror demonstrates that active diplomacy must come hand in hand with devastating pressure on Putin’s regime and unwavering support for the defense of Ukraine."

President Zelenskyy warned that the coming winter could be particularly harsh for Ukraine but pledged continued resistance. "Ukrainians understand that this winter could be very harsh for us. But in response, we will have no choice but to make it painful for Russia, too," he said on social media. "And that’s exactly why we say that de-escalation steps are important, are needed before winter, now."

Cross-border Drone Activity

Officials in western Russia reported Ukrainian long-range drone attacks on Thursday, though details were scarce. Drone fragments damaged an administrative building at an oil refinery in the Rostov region without causing a fire, according to Governor Yuri Slyusar. In the Krasnodar region, fragments from a Ukrainian drone ignited a brief fire at an industrial facility.

Romania's Ministry of National Defense announced that a drone entered its airspace for four minutes before crashing near a town close to the Ukrainian border. The ministry had previously scrambled fighter jets to monitor its airspace following drone detections near the border.

Moldova's Ministry of Defense also reported airspace incursions during Russia's attacks on Ukraine, leading authorities to temporarily close a portion of Moldova’s northern airspace.
