Russia Strikes Kill 8 in Ukraine Amid UN Peace Talks

Russian drone and missile attacks across Ukraine overnight killed at least eight civilians, officials said Thursday, as the conflict continues despite renewed appeals for a settlement at the United Nations General Assembly.

In the northeastern Kharkiv region, six agricultural workers were killed and 12 others wounded by a strike, according to Interior Minister Ihor Vyhivskyi. The capital, Kyiv, experienced an attack that killed a man and a woman, while officials in the southern port city of Odesa also reported a significant bombardment.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, addressing the U.N. General Assembly on Wednesday, urged nations to cut off Russia's revenue through sanctions and trade bans to deprive Moscow of the funds needed to sustain the war. He and other leaders have previously sought to pressure Russia into abandoning its objectives in Ukraine.

Despite years of diplomatic engagement, there is no indication of a resolution to the war, which has had global repercussions on food and energy supplies and severely strained relations between Russia and Western countries.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov reiterated Moscow's call for a comprehensive peace deal, rather than a temporary cessation of hostilities, in response to Ukraine's demand for a complete and unconditional ceasefire. Peskov stated that Russia believes peace is necessary, not a temporary truce, but Russia's demands, including territorial concessions from Ukraine, are unacceptable to Kyiv.

The aerial conflict has intensified in recent months, with Russia employing cruise and ballistic missiles, glide bombs, and jet-powered drones. In response, Ukraine has deployed long-range drones targeting oil refineries and businesses crucial to the Russian economy.

The front line in eastern and southern Ukraine, spanning approximately 1,250 kilometers (800 miles), has seen few substantial changes over the past year. Both sides extensively utilize drones, which limit movement along the front.

The attack on Kyiv damaged over 50 civilian sites, including apartment buildings, post offices, a maternity hospital, and a textile plant, the interior minister reported. Russia has frequently targeted Ukrainian trains, shopping malls, supermarkets, and gas stations, contributing to civilian anxiety.

Valentyna Kolosenko, a 49-year-old Kyiv resident, recounted how a reinforced door protected her during three nearby blasts, expressing a resolve to endure the hardships despite her fear. "Everything is paralyzed. Nothing works," she told The Associated Press. "Getting to work is incredibly difficult and frightening."

Liubov Paziuk, a 74-year-old pensioner in Kyiv whose home sustained shattered windows, stated her determination to resist the Russian advance. "We don’t get used to it, we adapt, because we have only one choice: to stay here, on our land, despite everything," she said.

Russia's Defense Ministry announced that its forces had targeted arms factories, telecommunications, and logistical facilities in Kyiv and the Odesa region overnight.

The United Nations reported last week that civilian casualties in Ukraine during the first eight months of 2026 surpassed those of the entire previous year. According to the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Russian attacks in August resulted in at least 368 civilian deaths and 2,314 injuries.

Ukraine's Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha commented on X that "Russia’s escalation of terror demonstrates that active diplomacy must come hand in hand with devastating pressure on Putin’s regime and unwavering support for the defense of Ukraine."

As winter approaches, President Zelenskyy acknowledged that conditions are likely to worsen but pledged continued resistance. "Ukrainians understand that this winter could be very harsh for us. But in response, we will have no choice but to make it painful for Russia, too," he stated on social media. "And that’s exactly why we say that de-escalation steps are important are needed before winter."

Meanwhile, officials in western Russia reported Ukrainian long-range attacks on Thursday, though details were scarce. Fragments of a Ukrainian drone reportedly damaged an administrative building at an oil refinery in the Rostov region without causing a fire, according to Governor Yuri Slyusar. In the Krasnodar region, drone fragments ignited a brief fire at an industrial facility, regional emergency officials said. Ukrainian officials have not yet commented on these incidents.

Romania's Ministry of National Defense reported that a drone violated its airspace for four minutes before crashing near a town in the country's north, close to the Ukrainian border. Earlier, the ministry had scrambled fighter jets to monitor airspace after detecting drones near the border. The origin of the drone was not specified.

Moldova's Ministry of Defense also reported airspace incursions during Russia's attacks on Ukraine, leading authorities to close a portion of Moldova's northern airspace.
