Russia carried out a large-scale missile and drone attack on Ukraine's capital overnight into Thursday, killing at least 11 people and injuring 54, including two children. The barrage of ballistic and cruise missiles and drones damaged buildings and civilian infrastructure across Kyiv, prompting residents to seek shelter in metro stations.
Kyiv City Military Administration head Tymur Tkachenko reported that eight people died in the capital, while Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko stated the death toll reached 11. Tkachenko also reported 54 injuries, including two children. Damage was recorded across 30 locations in the city, primarily affecting residential buildings and civilian infrastructure.
Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the assault as a "night of horror" and urged Ukraine's allies to hasten the supply of air defense systems and missiles. He rejected any suggestion that the strikes were retaliation for Ukrainian long-range attacks, asserting that Ukraine was exercising its right to self-defense.
Damage Across Districts
Explosions shook Kyiv for hours, with significant damage reported in multiple districts. In the Shevchenkivskyi district, a hotel and two five-story residential buildings were damaged. A paramedic was among those injured critically in this area. In the Desnianskyi district, residents were trapped in a damaged nine-story residential building.
A fire broke out on the roof of a 16-story building in the Holosiivskyi district. The Sviatoshynskyi district saw fires in two private residences, with debris trapping individuals in one location. In the Darnytskyi district, six levels of a nine-story building collapsed, and another five-story residential building sustained damage.
Tkachenko noted partial destruction of a residential building in Desnianskyi, fires near residential buildings in Pecherskyi, and a fire near an administrative building in Solomianskyi. Damage was also reported in the Obolonskyi and Podilskyi districts of Kyiv, and in five districts of the wider Kyiv region, though no casualties were reported outside the capital.
Russia has recently intensified its attacks on Kyiv. This escalation coincides with Ukraine's own long-range drone campaigns targeting Russian military sites and energy facilities, which have disrupted supply lines and caused fuel shortages within Russia. Mayor Vitali Klitschko urged residents to remain in shelters during the ongoing attack.
