Russian forces have continued their relentless aerial bombardment of Kyiv and surrounding areas for a fifth consecutive day, with attacks targeting food distribution centers and energy infrastructure. The intensified assaults have led to shortages in some supermarkets and disrupted daily routines for residents.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky stated that Russia's current tactic is to "wear down Ukraine and Ukrainians – first and foremost, our people." The recent wave of attacks has seen a significant increase in the deployment of jet-powered drones, which Zelensky acknowledged Ukraine is struggling to counter effectively. Between Thursday and Sunday, Russia reportedly fired nearly 1,500 drones at Ukraine, with approximately 800 of them being jet-powered.
In response to the jet-powered drones, Ukraine is working to develop more advanced interceptor technologies, with Zelensky noting that four companies have developed relevant technologies, one of which shows particular success.
Beyond infrastructure, Russian strikes have impacted food supply chains. Repeated attacks on distribution centers and retail hubs have disrupted logistics, leading to some supermarket shelves being left bare. However, an adviser to President Zelensky urged the public not to panic, stating that producers and retailers are restructuring supply chains and that European countries are prepared to fill any food supply shortfalls if necessary.
Simultaneously, Russia has continued its efforts to damage Ukraine's power grid, aiming to disrupt essential services as winter approaches. An overnight drone attack in the northern Chernihiv region damaged an energy facility. Russian defense officials have indicated preparations for "massive strikes" on Ukraine's energy infrastructure.
In retaliation, Ukraine has also targeted Russian territory. The Russian Defense Ministry reported shooting down 239 Ukrainian drones over various Russian regions and occupied Crimea. A Ukrainian missile attack on the Russian border city of Belgorod reportedly killed three people, and a drone attack wounded four in the Russian city of Yekaterinburg, an industrial hub located over 2,000 kilometers from Ukraine's border.
