Russian authorities have intensified a campaign against creators on the adult content platform OnlyFans, alongside producers and camera operators. This crackdown is framed as part of a broader national effort to uphold "traditional values," a policy that has gained prominence since Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Reports indicate that law enforcement agencies are actively scrutinizing online profiles for age-restricted content. Criminal cases related to the production and distribution of pornography have begun to surface.

While viewing and storing pornography is legal in Russia, its production and distribution are prohibited. This legal framework is being applied to OnlyFans creators, leading to arrests and prosecutions.

Notable Cases

In July, a Moscow court convicted 21-year-old Sofya Vershinina, also known as Sonya Marmeladova, for producing and distributing explicit videos online. Prosecutors stated she earned approximately £300,000 since January 2024. Vershinina received a three-year suspended sentence and a £45,000 fine after pleading guilty and expressing remorse. She remains subject to strict conditions, and her assets, including a gold iPhone, were confiscated.

Another prominent case involves Anastasia Ovsyannikova, 24, who was arrested in June on suspicion of illegal pornography production and dissemination. Ovsyannikova, who previously worked as a model, was apprehended alongside German producer Ludwig Kritschker, whose equipment was seized. Ovsyannikova was known for creating explicit content with Diana Shurygina, who also faces legal action.

Shurygina, 27, faces up to six years in prison, accused by the Kremlin of selling explicit content on OnlyFans. Police raided her apartment in June, confiscating filming equipment. She was arrested upon returning to Russia after a prolonged stay in Bali and is currently under house arrest.

Broader Context and Oversight

Ekaterina Mizulina, head of Russia’s Safe Internet League and a member of Putin’s Civic Chamber, is reportedly leading the anti-pornography efforts. Mizulina, who advocates for stringent internet censorship, played a role in drafting Russia's "gay propaganda" law in 2013. This legislation has been instrumental in subsequent actions, including the Supreme Court's branding of the international LGBTQ+ movement as "extremist."

Mizulina has also been linked to the reporting of Anastasia Bragina, a reality TV star arrested in June for filming herself naked in Moscow. Bragina was initially held for 14 days on charges of "dissemination of pornography among children" and subsequently rearrested on more serious charges related to the distribution of pornography through social networks.

OnlyFans itself had previously restricted Russian creators and users in 2022, citing payment processing issues related to economic sanctions. The platform later reinstated full functionality, stating it was committed to supporting its community.

Russia joins a list of countries that have implemented restrictions or bans on platforms like OnlyFans, including Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Pakistan, China, Turkey, Belarus, Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Philippines. India permits users to view content but prohibits its citizens from uploading it.
