Russia Attacks Kyiv With Drones Ahead of Zelensky's UN Address; 2 Dead, 23 Injured

Russia attacked Ukraine's capital, Kyiv, with drones on Wednesday, killing two people and injuring 23, according to authorities. The daylight assaults occurred as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky prepared to address world leaders at the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

The drone attacks, which have become a near-daily occurrence, also caused fires and damaged buildings in Kyiv and other parts of Ukraine. Palls of black smoke were seen rising above the capital following the strikes.

Zelensky was in New York as part of his ongoing diplomatic efforts to secure international support for Ukraine's defense against Russia's invasion. He was scheduled to address the General Assembly and meet with European leaders and NATO Secretary-General Mark Rutte.

Earlier on Tuesday, Zelensky met with U.S. President Donald Trump. The meeting occurred as Trump has expressed frustration with the lack of progress in peace negotiations and the escalating aerial attacks between Russia and Ukraine this year.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov stated Wednesday that there are no current plans for further U.S.-brokered talks between Russian and Ukrainian delegations. Russian President Vladimir Putin, who faces accusations from NATO and European governments of sabotage and espionage, is not attending the UN gathering this year.

In a separate incident, Poland's military reported that a Russian military helicopter briefly violated Polish airspace on Wednesday near the border with Russia's Kaliningrad exclave. Warsaw suggested the incursion was a test of Poland's air defense readiness.

Ukraine has continued its counter-offensive actions, including strikes on Russian oil refineries, which are critical to the Russian economy. Zelensky indicated before his U.S. visit that he had proposals to present regarding potential de-escalation of the conflict.

Key issues for Kyiv include protecting its power grid from Russian strikes and ensuring the safe passage of Ukrainian grain through the Black Sea. The demand for U.S.-made Patriot air defense systems remains high, but supply has been constrained following the recent conflict in Iran.

In Zaporizhzhia, in southeastern Ukraine, two men were injured in an attack that caused a large fire at a shopping mall. The fire spread across approximately 6,000 square meters before being brought under control by emergency services.

The Russian Defense Ministry claimed that its forces conducted overnight strikes targeting Ukraine's military-industrial and energy facilities, logistics centers, and naval vessels. The ministry also stated that its air defense systems intercepted over 500 Ukrainian drones across various Russian regions, including Crimea and the Sea of Azov and Black Sea.
