Russell to Start Singapore Grand Prix from Back of Grid Due to Penalty

George Russell of Mercedes will begin the Singapore Grand Prix from the rear of the grid after receiving a power-unit penalty. The penalty stems from an engine failure that forced Russell to retire from third place with five laps remaining in the Bahrain Grand Prix last Sunday.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff confirmed that Russell requires a new power unit for the Singapore weekend, exceeding the season's component limit. This necessitates the grid penalty.

"[Russell's penalty] is particularly frustrating given the way he drove last weekend and the result he deserved to be fighting for," Wolff stated. "Unfortunately, these things are part of the sport and our focus now is on giving him the best possible car and opportunities to fight back through the field."

Russell's retirement in Bahrain allowed Kimi Antonelli to gain a significant advantage in the Formula 1 world title race, extending his lead. Antonelli had previously taken a similar penalty when winning the Italian Grand Prix last month. This season has been marked by a series of mechanical issues for Russell, who won the Singapore Grand Prix the previous year.

Singapore is hosting the sixth and final sprint event of the season this weekend. The penalty will affect Sunday's Grand Prix but not Saturday's sprint race. Wolff added that the team has been working to understand and rectify performance issues since last Sunday, viewing the Singapore event as an immediate opportunity to continue that work and aim for strong results with both cars.
