Russell Brand Trial Begins in London
Comedian faces charges of rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault as his trial commences at Southwark Crown Court.
Comedian and actor Russell Brand appeared at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday to face trial on multiple charges, including rape, sexual assault, and indecent assault. Brand has denied all charges.
Before a jury of eight men and four women, the prosecution outlined the case, detailing allegations from six women. The alleged offenses are said to have occurred between 1999 and 2009. Prosecuting counsel Riel Karmy-Jones KC presented the jury with a preview of the evidence and testimony expected over the trial's nearly two-month duration. The prosecution described a pattern of alleged predatory behavior.
Brand, who has maintained his innocence, appeared in court with his counsel, Ian Winter KC. The comedian was observed to be composed during the proceedings, at times closing his eyes and holding a silver cross. His posture remained upright throughout the day.
His wife, Laura Gallacher, was present in the public gallery. She appeared solemn but composed alongside her husband's bodyguard. The couple has presented a united front of public impassivity amid the legal proceedings.
Outside the courthouse, Brand spoke briefly to media, stating he felt "blessed" and "hopeful." His legal team also raised concerns about the audible typing of journalists in the press benches.
The trial is ongoing.
