Russell Brand on Tuesday admitted to Southwark Crown Court that he had abused his fame and dedicated much of his life to "beyond reckless philandering and idiocy." The 51-year-old comedian is on trial facing seven charges, including three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault.

Giving evidence, Brand told the court that while he once enjoyed "staggering fame," the allegations against him mean no one would now "touch him with a barge pole." He stated that consent was "non-negotiable" and "more important than sex itself." However, as the trial progressed, Brand appeared confused at times, repeatedly asking for questions to be explained or repeated when challenged by prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones, KC, about his attitude toward women and his reported goal of sleeping with 5,000 women.

Brand apologized to the jury for "inconsistent" details, admitting his recollection of events now differed from his initial defense statement. He stated that "escalating recollection" had occurred since the alleged events, describing it as a "deeply traumatic episode" that had impacted his marriage, children, and health. "I ask your forgiveness," he told the prosecutor, though he later amended this to "not your forgiveness."

He conceded that he had been a "very determined and focused man" and, with regard to women, had been "persuasive, seductive, begging and flirting." Brand acknowledged that as he became more successful and famous, he "misused that commodity very selfishly and regrettably," agreeing that he allowed his fame "to facilitate sexual access, which I agree with you was wrong."

The court heard that Brand once referred to his youngest alleged victim, then 21, as a "tart" after selecting her and another 19-year-old fan for a "threesome" following a 2009 concert. The prosecutor suggested that the woman, who reportedly developed an alcohol addiction after the alleged rape, was simply "another conquest on your way to 5,000." Brand responded, "I really do not know the numbers, but it is difficult to dispute that, that is how I conducted myself in those years."

When asked about the alleged rape, Brand stated he had a "vague recollection" of seeing blood or excrement on his sheets but nothing he considered remarkable at the time. His wife, Laura Gallacher, and his father, Ron, were present in the public gallery as Brand described himself as having been "obsessed" with sex from a younger age and frequently having encounters with women he had just met. He also mentioned experiencing "staggering fame" after his marriage to pop star Katy Perry in 2010.

Brand's defense has lasted one day, and the case is expected to conclude on Thursday morning. The allegations against him first came to light in a 2023 Channel 4 documentary, after which Brand stated he had been unable to persuade anyone to testify on his behalf. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.
