Russell Brand's Wife Testifies in Rape Trial, Acknowledges Past Monogamy Struggles

Laura Brand, wife of the actor and comedian Russell Brand, testified Thursday as a defense witness in his ongoing rape and sexual assault trial. Brand, 51, faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault involving six women between 1999 and 2009. He has pleaded not guilty to all charges.

During her testimony, Laura Brand described her husband as "caring and kind, a wonderful father to our children, and an amazing, attentive husband." She also shared details about the beginning of their relationship, which started in 2006. According to her account, they split the following year due to Brand's "difficulty with monogamy" and her own "inexperience."

"I was not interested in having a relationship with him if he was sleeping with other people," Laura Brand told the court, per Sky News. "We both had told each other we loved each other, but it was clear it was difficult for him to be monogamous."

The couple rekindled their relationship in 2015 and married in 2017. They have three children together.

Russell Brand testified earlier in the trial, acknowledging he had been "reckless" and used his fame to pursue sexual relationships but maintained that all encounters were consensual. He stated that consent was "fundamental, essential and necessary."

Prosecutors allege that Brand committed the offenses against six women over a 10-year period, with alleged encounters taking place at various locations including a hotel, a bar, a radio station, a workplace, and Brand's home. The women have testified in court about these alleged events.

Brand previously denied the allegations in a video posted to social media in September 2023, shortly after accusations were made public by U.K. media outlets Channel 4 and The Sunday Times. In the video, he stated that his relationships were "always consensual" and that he was "a fool" in his past but "never a rapist."

The investigation into Brand began after a joint investigation by Channel 4 and The Sunday Times, which featured anonymous complaints accusing him of physical and emotional abuse, bullying, and instances of sexual assault. Brand has called these accusations a "litany of extremely egregious and aggressive attacks."
