Russell Brand Rape Trial: Jurors Dismissed on Day One
Six potential jurors were removed from consideration on the opening day of the high-profile trial involving allegations of sexual assault.
The first day of the trial for comedian and actor Russell Brand saw six potential jurors dismissed after it emerged they were aware of a 2023 investigation into sexual assault allegations against him. The allegations, which Brand denies, span three counts of rape, three of sexual assault, and one of indecent assault, reportedly involving six women between 1999 and 2009.
Brand, 51, appeared at Southwark Crown Court for jury selection. His wife, Laura Gallacher, was present in the public gallery. Mr Justice Bennathan reduced the pool of 50 prospective jurors to 20, with six being ruled out due to their knowledge of the Channel 4 Dispatches and Sunday Times investigation. This investigation detailed accusations of sexual assault, which Brand has consistently denied.
The judge informed the remaining jurors that the trial could extend until December 11. Details of the jury selection process and the atmosphere in the courtroom on the opening day are being documented by crime reporters Caroline Cheetham and Liz Hull. Their coverage is available through The Trial podcast, which also offers daily video episodes on YouTube. An exclusive bonus episode is also available to subscribers of thecrimedesk.com.
