Actor-comedian Russell Brand stated that “today is the day for truth and justice” as he appeared in a London court to deny charges of rape and sexual assault. Brand, 51, entered Southwark Crown Court alongside his wife, Laura Gallacher, and spoke briefly to reporters before taking the stand.
In the witness box, Brand took the oath and entered a plea of not guilty to each charge: three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of attempted indecent assault. He told the court that the allegations had a “devastating” impact, stating, “My entire life has been consumed by these events, these allegations, these accusations.”
Over the preceding two weeks of the trial, prosecutors presented their case, and the jury heard testimony from six women who accuse Brand of sexual misconduct occurring between 1999 and 2009. The prosecution has described Brand as “ruthless, he was calculating, he was manipulative. And, the prosecution say, he was a sexual predator.”
Brand gained prominence in the early 2000s through his stand-up comedy, television programs, and a BBC radio show. He also appeared in Hollywood films such as “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and “Get Him to the Greek.” He was briefly married to pop star Katy Perry.
In recent years, Brand has shifted away from mainstream media, relocating to Florida and developing a significant online presence. His online content includes videos that blend wellness, conspiracy theories, and discussions of his religious devotion.
