Russell Brand Appears in Court for Rape Trial
The comedian and actor faces multiple charges, denying all allegations.

Russell Brand appeared at Southwark Crown Court Tuesday for the commencement of his rape trial, where he faces three counts of rape, three counts of sexual assault, and one count of indecent assault. Brand, who denies all charges, arrived at the court building shortly before 9:30 a.m. and was met by a throng of media.
He told reporters gathered outside that he felt "blessed" and "hopeful." Inside the courtroom, his legal counsel, Ian Winter KC, requested that journalists in the press gallery "type less audibly."
Brand, described as a comedian, actor, podcaster, and guru, stood in the reception area before entering the courthouse, where a person described as an aide adjusted his scarf and hair. Brand then proceeded to court, where he sat behind a glass screen. He maintained a neutral expression throughout the proceedings, at times closing his eyes and clutching a silver cross.
The prosecution, led by Riel Karmy-Jones KC, presented an overview of the allegations to the jury of eight men and four women. The alleged offenses span from 1999 to 2009 and involve six women, all of whom are now in their 50s, as is Brand. Karmy-Jones KC outlined a pattern of alleged predatory behavior, detailing accusations of forced oral sex, anal rape, attempted sexual assault, and unwanted exposure.
Brand's wife, Laura Gallacher, was present in the public gallery, seated next to his bodyguard. She appeared sombre and composed during the proceedings.
The trial is expected to last nearly two months. The case continues.
