Russell Brand Accuser Describes Fear of Pregnancy After Alleged Rape

A woman who alleges Russell Brand raped her in a hotel has told police she was left feeling "dirty" and afraid she may be pregnant in the aftermath of the alleged attack. The 51-year-old actor and comedian faces seven charges – three counts of rape, three of sexual assault, and one of indecent assault. The allegations, made by six female complainants, span a 10-year period between 1999 and 2009. Brand denies the charges.

Video evidence played to the jury on Thursday included a recording of one complainant telling the police, "He raped me basically and I know that happened." The jury heard that this woman met Brand in 1999, before he was famous. In a police interview recorded in 2023, she stated that she had attended the Labour Party conference and a fringe event where she spoke to Brand. She alleges he later raped her.

The complainant told an officer that they had both gone back to a hotel room. She said she initially thought Brand was gay and did not feel he was trying to initiate anything. However, upon returning from the bathroom, she was "taken aback and shocked" to see him wearing only briefs. She claims Brand told her, "Don't worry, that's how I am."

She recalled thinking "what on earth have I got into" when, she alleges, a shirtless Brand made her take photos of him before the alleged attack. She told the officer, "I'm reporting that Russell Brand did rape me." She added that at the time, she second-guessed herself, questioning if it was rape because his behavior seemed "so normal." The complainant testified, "he raped me basically – I know that happened. I remember him touching my breasts a lot - while kissing my neck."

The woman described Brand's actions before the alleged rape as resembling a "goose step" like Basil Fawlty, and characterized him as acting like an "ostrich – like a bird because he was very leggy." She stated she was not laughing but remembered him "jumping up and down being silly."

After Brand left the room, she said she was "just sitting there crying and I felt stupid," adding that in that moment she was "just shocked." At one point during the police interview, she cried, saying it felt like "something dirty that had happened." She also stated that she "thought it was my fault" and was experiencing "nightmares" about the possibility of being pregnant.
