Households that depend on heating oil for warmth and hot water are advocating for improved regulatory measures to protect them from volatile price swings. Residents are expressing concerns about the unpredictability of costs, especially in light of recent global events that have impacted energy markets.
One household in Hanley Swan reported that they were fortunate to have purchased 2,000 liters of heating oil for £1,200 just before a significant price increase. This supply is expected to last until autumn. "Had we ordered it a week and a half later, I think it would have cost us nearly £1,000 more," stated one resident.
Amid fluctuating costs, families have also been conscious of their energy consumption. The recent heatwaves led to a natural reduction in hot water usage. However, mindful of the expense, efforts have also been made to decrease overall fuel consumption. "There's a limit to what you can do with that given it's our only source of heating and hot water," the resident added. This situation has underscored the importance of improved protections for heating oil customers.
Beyond price regulation, there is a growing sentiment favoring a transition to renewable energy sources. "I think that the real solution is to stop using oil," one individual commented. While exploring alternatives like solar panels, some households report a lack of support for those looking to adopt different energy solutions for their homes. "We've been looking into solar panels but there's very little support out there for people who might want to look at alternate ways for running their household."
