Runners Turn to Etsy Witches for Cooler Weather at NYC Marathon

As the 50th annual New York City Marathon approaches, some runners are seeking supernatural intervention to combat predicted warm weather. Forecasters expect race day to be one of the warmest in the past decade, with highs around 63 degrees Fahrenheit.

In response, dozens of athletes are turning to online platforms like Etsy to hire practitioners, often referred to as "witches," to cast spells aimed at lowering the temperature. This trend follows similar reports from the Chicago Marathon earlier this month, where runners also sought to reverse unseasonably warm conditions.

Jessica O’Neill Lyublinksy, a first-time marathoner, purchased a "perfect weather" spell for $20. She stated that she is "pretty confident in the spell! Why not?" Lyublinksy, who has been training since June, views the spell as a small investment compared to the costs of race entry fees, gear, and nutrition.

She described the experience as "manifestation!" and noted some coincidences occurring since hiring the practitioner, including finding a throwaway sweater with the name of her college bar. Meteorologists indicate that Sunday is forecast to be warm and sunny with minimal wind. The day will begin around 50 degrees Fahrenheit at the 8 a.m. start time, rising to a high of 63 degrees by 3 p.m. This temperature range is warmer than ideal for optimal marathon performance, with some experts suggesting temperatures in the low 40s are more conducive to peak athletic output.

Lorra Barile, founder of the Reckless Run Crew, has also employed a practitioner from "Mirage Mages" for a "good weather spell." She reported a "three out of four success rate" with spells cast for her club's events, including one that allegedly cleared the skies for the Knicks Parade. Barile shared that the spell costs $6, which she deems a reasonable trade-off for a potential change in weather, comparing it to the cost of a morning latte.

If the forecast holds, this year's marathon could rank among the hottest in the last decade. In 2022, the marathon experienced 74-degree heat, and in 2023, temperatures reached 65 degrees. Historically, the race has seen extreme conditions, with sweltering 80-degree heat in 1979 and a cold event in 1995 when temperatures neared 40 degrees with a wind chill in the 20s.
