Runner Dies After Participating in Cardiff Half Marathon
Event organizers confirmed the death and extended condolences to the participant's family and friends.
A runner has died following their participation in the Cardiff Half Marathon, event organizers Run4Wales confirmed on Monday. The circumstances surrounding the death were not immediately released.
"We'd like to acknowledge the event and hospital medical teams who reacted with great speed and professionalism," Run4Wales said in a statement. "Our deepest sympathies go out to the runner's family and friends."
The organization stated that no further details would be shared out of respect for the family's wishes.
This year marked the 23rd edition of the 13.1-mile (21km) race, which saw approximately 30,000 participants. The event is Wales' largest mass participation and multi-fundraising event, raising over £4 million annually for charity.
Previous editions of the Cardiff Half Marathon have also seen fatalities. In 2024, Stephen Jenkins, 37, died in the hospital after collapsing at the finish line. In 2019, Ben McDonald, 25, and Dean Fletcher, 32, both died from cardiac arrest shortly after crossing the finish line.
The Cardiff Half Marathon is recognized as the UK's second-largest half marathon and is a member of the SuperHalfs, a series of international half marathons that includes races in Lisbon, Prague, Berlin, Copenhagen, and Valencia. It also holds an Elite Race Label from World Athletics.
