The burgeoning rivalry between Northern and Southern Hemisphere rugby nations in the new Nations Championship is proving to be closer than ever, according to recent analysis.
Tactical differences, while still present, have diminished over the past couple of years. The average ball-in-play time in Test matches has increased by nearly two and a half minutes, with ball-carrying volume up by 17% compared to the 2021-2023 period. This indicates a stylistic shift towards keeping the ball in play.
However, distinct approaches persist. Northern hemisphere teams, on average, kick the ball 80 meters further from open play and make 25 more tackles per game. Conversely, Southern hemisphere sides maintain a faster ruck recycle rate, 10% quicker, and achieve 18% more post-contact meters, aligning with traditional strengths.
The upcoming tournament features top players entering with strong domestic form, following recent finals in the United Rugby Championship, England's Premiership, France's Top 14, and Super Rugby.
Ireland and Leinster's second-row player, Joe McCarthy, has been identified as the world's most in-form player. Data experts Oval Insights, using match ratings that quantify a player's net impact on scoring opportunities, have awarded him an average rating of 8.5 out of 10 over his last five matches in the past 60 days. New Zealand's Jordie Barrett and England's Tommy Freeman are ranked second and third respectively, both with ratings of 8.3. They, like McCarthy, have recently secured club silverware. France scrum-half Maxime Lucu and Australia centre Len Ikitau follow closely behind, with ratings of 8.2.
