Rubio Warns of Ukraine War Spillover, Urges Swift Resolution
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio expresses concern over the potential for the Russia-Ukraine conflict to expand, emphasizing the need for its termination.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated on Monday that the war in Ukraine should be the primary focus for both Russia and Ukraine, highlighting the "real risk" of the conflict spreading.
Speaking to reporters in Uzbekistan, Rubio addressed discussions about a potential meeting between US President Donald Trump, Russian President Vladimir Putin, and Chinese leader Xi Jinping to negotiate an end to the conflict. While he was uncertain if such a meeting had been finalized, Rubio affirmed that President Trump has been clear about his desire for the war to conclude.
Rubio, who arrived in Samarkand on Sunday for engagements with the C5+1 group (comprising the United States and five Central Asian nations: Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Turkmenistan), emphasized the negative consequences of the ongoing war.
"We see nothing good coming from this war," Rubio said. "We see a lot of downside to it, including the very real risk of escalation and spread of this thing… into another country because of a failed sabotage attack, because of drones that are hit with electronic warfare and they wander into a neighboring country."
This concern follows recent actions by the Trump administration aimed at de-escalating tensions. The US has been involved in mediation efforts for a peace deal, and President Trump has previously announced a diesel import agreement with Russia and waived certain sanctions on Moscow, intentions he stated were to encourage Russia to engage in negotiations.
These measures have drawn criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Meanwhile, the conflict in Ukraine continues, with a recent Russian air strike reported to have caused casualties and damage in Kyiv.
