Rubio Snaps at Reporters Over Guilfoyle Investigation

Senator Marco Rubio became visibly irritated when confronted by reporters regarding a State Department Office of Inspector General investigation into U.S. Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle. The probe, first reported by the Daily Mail, has increased pressure on the Trump administration, alongside other reports detailing allegations of a request for a $100,000 payoff for a personal American Express bill.

Rubio, who was preparing to board a plane on a foreign diplomatic tour, rejected the reporters' attempts to elicit an immediate reaction. "I'm not playing this game with you," Rubio stated. "I don't even know what's true or not true." He further expressed his skepticism about media reports, saying, "You guys somehow walk around thinking that because some source told you something and you reported it, it's the gospel. It's not the gospel."

Rubio criticized the process of responding to news stories that have just broken, emphasizing, "Our job is not to respond every time someone decides to give the media something without any advance warning, without having any chance to look at it and see what's in there. So I'm not going to comment on a story that literally posted a few hours ago."

Meanwhile, Vice President JD Vance addressed similar questions regarding allegations of a U.S. ambassador soliciting personal debt payoffs in exchange for government access. Vance admitted, "Obviously I don't love that," but adopted a cautious stance, declining to confirm details before a thorough review. "What I find with these stories is that you never want to comment in a purely abstract way because a lot of times the details really matter, and the details and the context inform the reality of the situation," Vance said. "So of course, I don't like anybody selling access to another government official, certainly a high-level government official."

He added that "context matters" and that he would "like to get the full story before offering a real opinion." Vance concluded, "A good lesson for a politician is never speak about something you don't have the full facts."

A touchy Secretary of State snapped at reporters after being thrust into the lion's den abroad, forced to field a wave of negative global headlines following a Daily Mail exclusive report revealing a State Department Office of Inspector General (OIG) investigation into US Ambassador to Greece Kimberly Guilfoyle

According to five sources who confirmed the probe to the Daily Mail, the investigation into Guilfoyle, 57, and her embassy in Athens is formal. Three sources indicated that the Inspector General's office is examining allegations related to Guilfoyle's potential substance abuse, use of private aircraft, ties to an energy and construction company, and improper acceptance of gifts. This inquiry follows extensive reporting by the Daily Mail on Guilfoyle's opulent lifestyle, which has included detailed accounts of luxury travel, parties with prominent Greek figures, a private photographer, demands for champagne, an unpaid dining bill, home renovations, and close associations with energy lobbyist Christos Marafatsos.

The official investigation was initiated after internal complaints within the U.S. Embassy in Greece reportedly escalated to a critical point, according to sources speaking to the Daily Mail. Jesse Binnall, Guilfoyle's lawyer, declined to comment on the probe when previously approached, stating that the ambassador adheres to a standard policy of not commenting on "internal matters." He added that "any implication of wrongdoing by the Ambassador is unsupported" and referred inquiries to the State Department OIG.
