Rubio Assures Zelensky US Support Amidst Intelligence Sharing Friction

Secretary of State Marco Rubio spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Tuesday to address recent tensions between the United States and Ukraine concerning intelligence sharing and access to satellite internet services. The 45-minute call aimed to dispel what Rubio described as inaccurate media reports about the U.S. stance.

Rubio asserted that the Trump administration's policy towards Ukraine remains unchanged and that no directives have been issued to limit intelligence sharing. This comes after Ukrainian officials reported not receiving advance warnings from U.S. intelligence about Russian ballistic missile attacks. President Zelensky had previously stated that Ukraine was attacked by Russian missiles three times in one week without prior notification from U.S. intelligence.

Rubio characterized these incidents as technical issues rather than a political decision to withhold information. "Our understanding is that to the extent that happened on the 13th and on the 18th, it was a technical matter," he told reporters. "It was not the result of any sort of U.S. directive not to provide advance warning of a strike, and we are providing the same warnings to them now that we always have."

Concerns were also raised about potential throttling of Starshield satellite internet access, which Ukrainian officials claimed had impacted drone operations. Both the Trump administration and SpaceX have denied any deliberate slowdown.

A significant portion of the conversation focused on Ukraine's need for more interceptors for air defense systems like the Patriot missile system. Ukraine has reportedly faced shortages of these interceptors. Rubio explained that the high global demand for such defense equipment means that the U.S. has its own needs to fulfill, stating, "There's nothing being deliberately denied to Ukraine."

Zelensky acknowledged the call and expressed gratitude for Rubio's engagement, noting plans for future communication. The discussions occurred as Ukraine continues its efforts to secure international support and as peace talks aimed at ending the conflict are ongoing.
