Royals Visit Aberfan to Mark 60th Anniversary of Disaster

King Charles III, Queen Camilla, and Prince William are scheduled to visit Aberfan on Wednesday to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the colliery spoil tip collapse that killed 144 people, including 116 children. The royal party will participate in a prayer and a moment of silence, and will listen to a performance by a male voice choir formed in the disaster's aftermath. They are expected to meet with survivors, bereaved parents, and community members who will share their personal reflections on the tragedy.

The disaster occurred on October 21, 1966, when a massive accumulation of coal waste liquefied and slid down a mountainside, engulfing Pantglas Junior School and several houses in the former mining village. The Aberfan Memorial Garden, established on the site of the destroyed school, and the local community center are among the planned stops for the royals.

During their visit, the King, Queen, and Prince of Wales will view an exhibition detailing the extensive rescue efforts. They will also spend time with former pupils of Pantglas school, siblings of those who perished, and members of the Aberfan Wives, a support group created for mothers who lost children. The Ynysowen Male Voice Choir, which originated as a way for local men to process their experiences following the disaster, will also perform.

Jeff Edwards, one of the last children to be rescued alive from the rubble, is among those who will share their accounts. Prince William is also slated to visit Ynysowen Community Primary School, founded to preserve the legacy of Pantglas Junior School, where he will unveil an Aberfan Memorial Tree.
