The Royal Navy has intensified patrols to monitor Russian military activity in response to U.S. intelligence warnings that Russian President Vladimir Putin could order attacks on a NATO country within weeks. U.S. officials are concerned that Russia may attempt to test the alliance's resolve through small land incursions or cyberattacks across Eastern Europe, with potential actions anticipated from this autumn through 2029.

These warnings follow recent incidents, including a Russian missile landing in Poland and the discovery of an explosive drone at Leipzig airport in Germany. British Armed Forces have also increased vigilance, with Royal Navy crews conducting patrols in North Atlantic and coastal waters throughout July.

Poland's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski confirmed the U.S. assessment, suggesting that Putin, described as "pretty desperate," might orchestrate a "false flag provocation." While acknowledging Russia's current inability to launch a full-scale invasion of NATO, Sikorski indicated that "something nasty is possible."

Military experts have been observing Russia's shift toward "new generation warfare," a blend of cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and weaponized migration, according to retired Rear Adm. Mark Montgomery, director of The Foundation for Defense and Democracies. He believes the likelihood of Russia employing such tactics at scale to deter NATO support for Ukraine is increasing.

Sikorski noted that Putin's efforts to weaken NATO have inadvertently strengthened its resolve, leading to increased defense spending across Europe. He stated that rearmament efforts are necessary until the end of the decade to ensure Russia will not dare to attack.

The UK Ministry of Defence reported a 25 percent increase in Royal Navy deployments to shadow Russian warships and submarines in British waters during the first seven months of the year compared to the same period in 2025. This enhanced surveillance comes after Royal Marine commandos intercepted and boarded a sanctioned Russian oil tanker, the Smyrtos, in the English Channel in June. The UK has been a leader in disrupting Russia's shadow fleet, having sanctioned over 500 vessels, which the MoD states directly impacts resources supporting Russia's aggression in Ukraine.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a deal with the U.S. for monthly deliveries of Patriot air-defense missiles. This development follows recent Russian strikes near Kyiv that resulted in three fatalities, including a child.
