Despite its 1960s 'office block' exterior, the Royal Lancaster London has been recognized by Tripadvisor's Travellers' Choice Awards, with its staff and service credited for its success.
The Royal Lancaster London has been named the UK's top hotel in Tripadvisor's 'Best of the Best' Travellers' Choice Awards, also ranking fourth globally. The recognition comes despite the hotel's modernist 1960s tower architecture, designed by Richard Seifert, which is described as resembling an office block.
Located on the northern edge of Kensington Gardens, the hotel offers views of the park and the city skyline. Its position is also noted for its practicality, with a Tube station nearby and an eight-minute walk to Paddington railway station.
The hotel's design, completed in 1967, has been softened by a curved, glass-heavy entrance. Historically, it was a venue for notable events, including the release party for The Beatles' film "Yellow Submarine" in 1968 and scenes for Michael Caine's 1969 film "The Italian Job."
Inside, the hotel features marble floors, a sweeping staircase, mid-century furniture, and gold accents. Staff are described as warm and attentive.
General Manager Sally Beck attributes the hotel's rise in rankings, from 272nd in 2013 to its current top position, to the service provided by its team, many of whom have been with the hotel for decades. "It's the service that guests tend to remember when they leave," Beck stated.
Rooms are decorated in a "timeless classic style" with clean lines, wood, velvet, and leather. They are considered comfortable bases, particularly for enjoying the views.
The Nipa Thai restaurant within the hotel is highlighted, particularly its papaya salad and beef massaman dish. The restaurant features teak furnishings, orchids, white tablecloths, and low lighting.
