Royal Family May Distance From Harry and Meghan Amid Father's Allegations
King Charles III could use child pornography allegations against Thomas Markle Sr. to create a firmer separation from the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.
The British royal family may increase their distance from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle following child pornography allegations against Meghan's father, Thomas Markle Sr., according to royal commentator Kinsey Schofield.
"This may give King Charles III the ammunition to take a firmer stance in distancing the monarchy from Harry and Meghan," Schofield told Page Six. "The Sussexes are private citizens, and perhaps it’s time the Palace made that separation unmistakably clear."
Schofield suggested that the monarchy should not have to continue "absorbing the reputational fallout" from controversies involving individuals connected to the royal family. She cited the ongoing reputational damage from former Prince Andrew’s association with Jeffrey Epstein as an example of the kind of unwelcome controversy the Palace aims to avoid.
Buckingham Palace has not issued a public statement regarding the allegations. A source close to the Palace indicated that the matter is considered an issue for the "Sussex Household," implying it does not directly concern the King or the broader royal family.
Markle Family Controversy
The allegations against Thomas Markle Sr. emerged publicly when Meghan's half-brother, Thomas Markle Jr., accused their father of possessing child sexual abuse material. This has reportedly sparked a significant rift within the Markle family. Meghan's half-sister, Samantha Markle, has publicly defended their father, accusing Thomas Jr. of fabricating the claims for financial gain and suggesting their father might have been framed.
Thomas Markle Sr. has vehemently denied the accusations, calling them "sick lies" and expressing shock and upset over his son's claims. He stated, "I could never do what I’m being accused of. It’s the worst thing anyone could accuse me of."
The Cebu City Police Office in the Philippines is reportedly investigating the allegations, with the Women and Children Protection Center assigned to the case.
Meghan Markle released a statement expressing that she was "deeply distressed" by the investigation. She also revealed that she had been aware of troubling allegations against her father for years. In her statement, she explained that the distance she maintained from her father and her decision to keep him from their children was made to protect them. She expressed hope that her decision would be understood, noting, "I trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families."
Meghan has been estranged from her father since at least 2018, following reports that he staged paparazzi photos shortly before her wedding to Prince Harry. Thomas Markle Sr. did not attend the wedding. Harry and Meghan stepped back from their royal duties in 2020 and moved to California. They later returned to the UK in August of the current year.
