Royal Author Compares Prince Harry to Edward VIII, Citing 'Miserable' Demeanor

Royal author Hugo Vickers has drawn a parallel between Prince Harry and the late Duke of Windsor, Edward VIII, suggesting that both have appeared "utterly miserable" after stepping away from royal duties. Vickers, an expert on the royal family and author of "Behind Closed Doors: The Tragic, Untold Story of the Duchess of Windsor," made the comparison on a special episode of "Palace Confidential."

Vickers posited that embracing duty ultimately leads to greater long-term happiness than pursuing what might be perceived as personal happiness. He cited a comparison between images of Queen Elizabeth II, who he described as having "sparkling eyes" while performing her duties, and the Duke of Windsor in his later years, whom he recalled as having "really dead, sad eyes."

"If ever you have to choose between the two, duty will always make you happier in the long run," Vickers stated. "You see that with Prince Harry, he took a different path and he looks utterly miserable."

Edward VIII abdicated the throne in December 1936, shortly after his accession, to marry Wallis Simpson, an American socialite who had been divorced twice. His decision, which was opposed by the government and the royal family, led to his effective exile. Vickers was a historical consultant for the upcoming film "My Duchess," which focuses on the final years of Wallis Simpson's life in France, following the Duke of Windsor's death in 1972 and preceding her own in 1986.

Vickers also addressed comparisons between Wallis Simpson and Meghan Markle, asserting that the similarities are limited to them both being American and having been previously married. He emphasized that the Duchess of Windsor provided excellent care for the Duke, ensuring his comfort and maintaining a stylish and elegant presence, while also preserving the narrative of their relationship as a great love story.

Vickers' book, "Behind Closed Doors," serves as the basis for the new film "My Duchess." The full "Palace Confidential" episode is available on YouTube, where Vickers also discusses the Duke of Windsor's controversial associations with Nazis.
