Roy Keane Criticizes Phil Foden's Post-Red Card Taunt

Roy Keane has criticized Manchester City's Phil Foden for taunting Manchester United fans after receiving a red card in the derby match at Old Trafford. Foden was sent off in the first half for kicking out at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes. Despite Foden's dismissal, City went on to win the match 1-0 with a goal from Erling Haaland. Following the game, Foden was seen gesturing the 1-0 scoreline to Manchester United fans outside the stadium.

Speaking on the 'Stick to Football' podcast, Keane stated his displeasure with Foden's actions, particularly given the circumstances of his red card. "You've just been sent off, what are you doing? Get on the bus," Keane commented, suggesting Foden should have avoided engaging with the fans. Jill Scott, also on the podcast, defended Foden, suggesting he was reacting to criticism and that his actions were those of a fan. However, Keane remained firm in his view.

Other football pundits have also weighed in on the incident. Alan Shearer, speaking on 'The Rest Is Football', suggested that Fernandes's reaction was also excessive and that both players could have potentially received red cards. Micah Richards, a former Manchester City defender, agreed that Foden's reaction wasn't severe but pointed out that Fernandes initiated the contact and also kicked Foden. The referees' body, Pro Ref, later issued an apology regarding the VAR decision that allowed Haaland's goal to stand, and the two VAR officials involved have reportedly been restricted from officiating Manchester United games for the time being. Foden will serve a three-match suspension for his red card.
